Listen to sleigh bells as you ride in a two-horse open sleigh and imagine yourself in a Currier and Ives Christmas card. Horse drawn sleigh rides are romantic, fun and a great way to see the beauty of the Colorado Rockies during the winter. Throw in a hot cup of cocoa with marshmallows around a campfire or a home-cooked meal in a heated, western dining hall and the experience is complete.
Several ranches in the area offer sleigh rides for families or that romantic couple:
- At Sombrero Stables at Snow Mountain Ranch try a horse-drawn sleigh ride through snow covered meadows and winter forests to the nearly century old Rowley Homestead. Disembark to a crackling campfire, hot chocolate, and marshmallows to toast. While there make a snow angel, pet a horse, and see fox, moose and snowshoe hares. Blankets provided, caroling encouraged.
- Have an appetite after a day of skiing Winter Park? Bundle up in blankets and take Sombrero Stables’ 45-minute looped sleigh ride under the stars that ends at a cozy western dining hall. Experience Colorado home-cooking with a choice of chicken, steak, or trout. Private one-horse open sleighs are also available. (970) 887-1999.
- Cabin Creek Stables at Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa offers morning and evening sleigh rides where you can help feed the horse herd and then take a sleigh ride overlooking the beautiful valley. The ride will end with hot drinks and s’mores around the campfire. During the one-hour sleigh ride, learn about horses, mules and donkeys. (970) 726-7000.
- Take a free carriage ride in Cooper Creek Square every Saturday from 3-6pm, November 18, 2015 to March 19, 2016.
Winter is a magical time to take a sleigh ride in the snow. Don’t miss this golden opportunity.
