Publisher’s Note – Moab

Publisher’s Note – Moab

Publisher’s Note: This year marks our 20th anniversary of producing this book. In some ways, twenty years seems like yesterday.

I had purchased a Westfalia camper van. (I was way ahead of today’s craze for camper vans!) My Mom suggested a trip to Moab as she had never been to Arches National Park. We camped at Sand Flats and then in Arches. We hiked to the Delicate Arch, drove all around the area, and really had a great time.

It was November and when it got a bit chilly one night, Mom asked about turning on the heater in the van.

The van didn’t have a heater, so we called on a friend to stay with him in his condo. You have to love good friends!

At dinner out that night, we got to talking to our server, Mike, about doing a guidebook for the area. Each time he brought something to our table, we asked him a question and he offered his thoughts.

By the time dessert came, we had decided we would do a guidebook for Moab and hired Mike to help with advertising sales. We had a great time that first year and I again camped in my van in Arches for the big delivery trip.

Over these past twenty years, it’s been great to have clients and colleagues become friends. I have had the most wonderful experiences learning, and writing about the people, the businesses, and the area.

While on a river trip last summer down the San Juan River, the stars were the main event. I was lying along the banks of the river and stargazing. The Milky Way was stretched the entire length of the river and canyon. I have never seen the Milky Way in its entirety in my life. It was breathtaking and an experience I will never forget. It inspired me to add more about the stars in this guidebook.

My Mom and business partner is now retired. She still loves to hear about the many adventures I take and the little bits of information I add to the book that makes people say “I didn’t know that!”

As a small business, this publication would never had made it to twenty years without the help and support from everyone around me, including my readers. So, enjoy this edition.
